Brampton Garbage, Recycling and Bulky Item Rules: Schedule, Tags and Drop-Offs (2026)

Brampton garbage and recycling are picked up every other week on alternating weeks, organics every week. Bins out by 7 a.m., $3 tags for extra bags, free bulky item pickup on garbage day, who runs recycling since January 2026, and Brampton drop-off centres and fees.

Verified October 26, 2026. Checked against Peel Region’s waste collection, bin, garbage tag, bulky waste, yard waste and Community Recycling Centre pages, Circular Materials’ Peel recycling guide, Peel Region news releases from September 2025 to March 2026, and the City of Brampton’s refuse and dumping page.

Short answer: In Brampton, garbage and recycling are picked up every other week on alternating weeks, and organics (the green bin) are picked up every week. Bins go to the curb by 7 a.m. and come back in by 8 p.m. Extra garbage needs a $3 tag per bag, except on garbage exemption days. Bulky items such as furniture and mattresses are picked up free on your regular garbage day. Peel Region still runs garbage, organics, yard waste and bulky collection, but since January 1, 2026, recycling has been run by Circular Materials, with GFL doing the pickups.

Who collects what in Brampton in 2026

Brampton residents often call the City about garbage, but curbside waste collection in Brampton is a Peel Region service, shared with Mississauga and Caledon. That changed in part this year and will change again in 2027.

The recycling change. Ontario moved responsibility for residential recycling from municipalities to the producers of packaging and paper. In Peel, that switch happened on January 1, 2026. Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit, now runs the program and has hired GFL Environmental to do the pickups. Peel said residents would keep their current blue bin and that collection days would not change. The first weeks were rough: Global News reported that Peel received more than 2,000 complaints in a single day in January as pickups stalled, and Mississauga’s mayor said complaints were falling later that week.

The 2027 change. Peel Regional Council has approved transferring curbside and multi-residential waste collection to the City of Brampton, the City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon. In September 2025, Council moved the transfer date to October 1, 2027, when the current collection contracts end. Peel will keep running the Community Recycling Centres and the transfer, processing and disposal of waste. Peel said there were no immediate changes for residents and that it will share more details closer to the date. Until then, the rules below are Peel’s.

Set-out rules Peel lists

  • Bins at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day, and back off the curb by 8 p.m.
  • Front of the bin facing the street, handles toward your house.
  • As close to the road as possible without blocking the road or the sidewalk.
  • About 1 m (3 ft) of space around each bin, and lids closed.
  • In winter, set bins about 1 m back from the road or curb, and never in or on top of a snowbank. Peel says it will fix or replace bins damaged by snow plows for free.
  • Do not jam material into a bin or let it overflow.

Collection times vary through the day. Peel’s advice is to leave your bin out until 8 p.m. and report it as missed only if it has not been picked up by then. Missed garbage, organics and yard waste go to Peel; missed recycling goes to GFL.

Garbage bins, extra bags and tags

Garbage bins come in three sizes: small (120 L), medium (240 L) and large (360 L). You can switch to a smaller or larger garbage or recycling bin. Peel says a $25 exchange fee applies for resale homes, and only property owners or landlords can request an exchange, so tenants need to ask their landlord.

Extra garbage needs a tag

Anything that does not fit in your garbage bin must be tagged, except during exemption periods. Peel’s rules for a tagged extra bag:

  • A black plastic garbage bag, tied at the top, with one tag per bag.
  • Under 20 kg (44 lb).
  • No larger than 66 cm (26 in) wide and 90 cm (35 in) high, and no smaller than 30 cm by 30 cm (12 in by 12 in).
  • Out on your garbage day only. Extra garbage is not picked up on recycling weeks.

What tags cost: $3 each, or $15 for a sheet of five. You can order online or by phone (905-791-9499 for Brampton and Mississauga) and the tags arrive by mail, or buy them in person. The City of Brampton lists these places to buy tags: Brampton City Hall, Cassie Campbell Community Centre, Century Gardens Recreation Centre, Earnscliffe Recreation Centre, Gore Meadows Community Centre, Brampton Soccer Centre and Susan Fennell Sportsplex. Online and phone orders take Visa or Mastercard only; in person, Peel accepts cash, debit, Visa and Mastercard. Sales are final.

Garbage exemption days

A few times a year, Peel runs garbage exemption days. On your exemption day you can put out unlimited acceptable garbage with no tags. Bags still have to meet the size and 20 kg limits, should sit about 1 m from your bin, and go out only on your garbage day. Peel does not publish a fixed list of exemption dates on its web page; they appear on your collection calendar.

Recycling: what goes in the blue bin

Circular Materials’ guide for Peel groups accepted items into four families. Some examples from its list:

  • Paper and fibre: cardboard boxes, boxboard, cartons and paper, including paper bags of any colour.
  • Plastic and foam: hard plastic containers and packaging (black plastic containers are listed as accepted), tubes, flexible plastic packaging such as bread, dry cleaning, newspaper and flyer bags, and foam packaging.
  • Paper laminate containers: including hot and cold beverage cups.
  • Metal and glass: metal containers, aluminum foil and trays, aerosol containers (not ones with toxic, corrosive or flammable symbols, with some exceptions) and glass containers.

Not accepted: books, toys, diapers, pots and pans, batteries and hazardous materials. Alcoholic beverage containers are also excluded from several categories.

How to prepare it: give containers a quick rinse, then put everything in the bin clean, dry and loose. Do not bag your recyclables. Keep lids on cartons, tubes and plastic containers, but remove lids from paper laminate containers and glass.

For missed recycling or a damaged blue bin, contact GFL at 1-877-268-4351 or peelrecycling@gflenv.com, or use GFL’s online form. Peel warns to expect long wait times by phone. General questions about what is accepted can also go to Circular Materials at 1-877-667-2626. You can still drop off recycling for free at any Peel Community Recycling Centre.

Organics and yard waste

Green bin

Every home uses the same 100 L green bin, collected weekly. Peel’s instructions are short: fruit and vegetable peels, meat, fish and bones go in the green bin, not the garbage. Remove packaging first. For liners, Peel lists certified compostable bags, cardboard, newspaper, shredded paper and paper towels. Kitchen containers are sold at Community Recycling Centres for $5 each.

Yard waste

Yard waste is seasonal. In 2026, Peel’s season began the week of March 9, with weekly pickup in Brampton. The rules:

  • Kraft brown paper bags only. Plastic bags filled with yard waste will not be collected.
  • Or a reusable container with rigid handles, up to 125 L, clearly labelled “yard waste” with a marker or sticker.
  • Each bag or container under 20 kg (44 lb) when full.
  • Your blue, grey or green bins cannot be used for yard waste.
  • Grass clippings are not accepted, at the curb or at Community Recycling Centres. Leave them on the lawn.
  • Out by 7 a.m. on your pickup day.

Fall leaves follow the same rules. Our guide to leaf collection in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton covers the fall season in more detail. Check your calendar for the last yard waste pickup of the year.

Bulky items, appliances and renovation waste

Peel defines bulky waste as any large item that will not fit in a bin or garbage bag. Furniture, mattresses and barbecues are its main examples. Acceptable bulky items are picked up free on your regular garbage collection day if they are at the curb by 7 a.m. Peel’s bulky waste page does not mention a booking step.

Paint, chemicals, batteries, propane tanks, mercury thermometersNever at the curb. Free household hazardous waste drop-off at a Community Recycling Centre

Peel’s pages do not publish a limit on how many bulky items you can put out on one garbage day. If you are clearing out a whole house, call 311 first or plan a trip to a Community Recycling Centre.

Leaving furniture, construction materials, tires or yard waste on public or private property that is not your own, or putting it out outside the collection rules, can be treated as dumping. The City of Brampton says it is illegal to dump waste on public or private property and asks residents to report dumping to 311 with the time, location, and a vehicle description and plate number if possible.

Brampton Community Recycling Centres and fees

Peel runs two Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) in Brampton:

  • Brampton CRC: 395 Chrysler Dr. Open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day, closed on statutory and provincial holidays.
  • Heart Lake CRC: 420 Railside Dr. Check Peel’s site for hours before you go.

Brampton residents can also use the Bolton, Caledon, Battleford and Fewster CRCs.

Peel CRC fees (October 2026)
What you bringCost
Chargeable items such as garbage, furniture, renovation waste$7 minimum per load, then 14.5 cents per kg above that
Dedicated loads of recycling, metals, electronics or appliancesFree
Household hazardous wasteFree (liquids up to 80 L per day, containers up to 30 L)
Used sharpsFree biohazard container, return it full to a CRC

CRCs take debit, Visa and Mastercard. Cash is not accepted. Keep free items in a separate load from chargeable items so they are not weighed together. The Brampton CRC also has donation areas for reusable items like kitchenware, clothing, linens and books.

Tips for new owners, landlords and renovators

  • Just bought a resale home? Look up your calendar on day one. If the previous owner’s garbage bin is the wrong size for your household, you can request an exchange; the $25 fee applies to resale homes. It is one of the small running costs we cover in what it costs to own a detached house in Brampton each month.
  • Renting out a unit? Only owners and landlords can request a bin exchange, so homes with a basement unit or several tenants may need a larger bin, or a clear plan for tags. Brampton also requires many landlords to hold a licence; see our Brampton rental licence guide.
  • Renovating? Drywall, lumber, flooring and other renovation debris will not be collected at the curb. Budget for a bin rental or CRC trips, and make sure the work itself has the right permits. Our guide to buying a home with unpermitted renovations explains why that matters at resale.
  • Winter is coming. Bins go 1 m back from the curb and never on a snowbank. You are also responsible for your own sidewalk in Brampton; see who has to clear the sidewalk.
  • Watch for 2027 updates. When the City of Brampton takes over collection on October 1, 2027, schedules, contacts or service levels could change. Peel has said it will communicate details closer to the transition.
